I see this mistake every single day. The guy sets up a blog, writes one or two posts and fills every corner with an ad. Adsense, Amazon etc etc.
I've seen recently launched blogs displaying over 5 different affiliate programs.
When I launched my first blog, over 2 years ago, I placed one or two Adsense ads and forgot about it. I didn't even check the stats for a long time. Because I knew those ads would bring no considerable money in the short run.
My main target on those days was building traffic. Only traffic can make you money, and John Chow knows what he's talking about.
Building traffic seems to be the big challenge for most newbies, but there is no secret. Write quality content and help people discover what a great writer you are.
There are hundreds of tips on building traffic, even softwares that promise to take you from 0 to thousands of readers in a minute.
Let me get this straight: there's no such thing as a free lunch. There's no secret formula or magic software that's going to turn your blog into the new Techcrunch.
People forget the most simple and efficient ways to build traffic.
1. Have your own domain, forget blogspot and stuff.
2. Use Wordpress, it's the best blogging platform ever made. It has everything you need to run a blog, lots of features and plugins that allow you to do almost everything you want.
3. Link, link, link. Link to specific posts that add value to your content. When you link this way, the trackback that you send to the linked blog will:
3.1. Get you noticed, since that blogger will certainly check who's linking to him.
3.2. Bring you readers, sometimes more than you expected. If you play the early bird, your trackback will be at the top, and readers tend to check the first impressions.
4. Read blogs on your niche and leave meaningful comments when you think you have something to add to the discussion. Don't comment just to be the first or say something stupid.
Following these tips for a couple of months, your traffic certainly will grow. When it happens, then you may think about adding a second affiliate program. Before that, you will only annoy your readers with banner over banner.
